EndNote referencing software

EndNote is a tool for managing references and bibliographies. Use EndNote to collect, organise and store references and full text documents in a personal library, insert in-text citations and create reference lists in a selected referencing style.

EndNote is recommended for people studying Honours or Postgraduate programs, UniSQ staff and researchers.

EndNote 20 is the latest version of the program. All UniSQ staff and students can download EndNote 20 for work and home computers. Please check the Compatibility, system & word processor requirements.

EndNote libraries created in earlier versions may not transfer easily to EndNote 20. If you are close to completing your PhD or research project, it is recommended that you continue using EndNote X9.3.3.

If you are a current EndNote user, please check that the software has undated to X9.3.3. To check for EndNote updates - in EndNote select ‘Help’ > ‘Check for Updates’.

The EndNote information below describes how to download and use EndNote 20. You can also attend online EndNote training sessions.

Before upgrading EndNote, back up EndNote libraries and uninstall earlier versions of the program. To avoid compatibility issues, check system requirements first. Download EndNote from the University site so the program is within UniSQ’s subscription. Details are provided in the download instructions.

Records can be added to your EndNote Library using any of the following methods:

EndNote 20 libraries can be organised to manage them efficiently.

Output (referencing) styles change the way your references display in your bibliography. EndNote comes pre-loaded with many of the most popular as well as some of the referencing styles for specific journals.

You will need to download some additional output styles including UniSQ Harvard AGPS style and AGLC that are not pre-loaded. Please see the instructions below:

You can use EndNote with Word to insert formatted in-text citations in a Word document using the selected referencing style, and automatically create a bibliography at the end of the document. This is called Cite While You Write (CWYW).

If EndNote inserted in-text citations require editing, the ‘Edit and Manage Citations’ menu on the EndNote 20 toolbar in Word must be used. Changes that can be made include excluding an author’s name or year, and adding page numbers, prefixes or suffixes.

Only one EndNote library should be used for a piece of writing- references used in one document should not come from different EndNote libraries.

It is essential to regularly make a back up copy of your EndNote library so that if something goes wrong, you will always have a working copy of your library.
