Manifest your motivation: D.I.Y vision board

By USQ 31 Dec 2019

When it comes to your chosen life decisions, such as study, it is important to remind yourself why you decided to start in the first place and why you should follow the advice of Dory in Finding Nemo and “just keep swimming”. Of course, you may have heard that actions speak louder than words, meaning that what someone actually does means more than what they say they will do. So, what better way to put this into practice than with a D.I.Y vision board! Vision boards are backed by research as a useful tool to inspire you to focus on your goals and empower you to create the life that you imagine through identifying your tactics and aspects of the goal you are manifesting (Burton & Lent 2016, p. 53).

The benefits of creating a vision board

A vision board can create an emotional connection that motivates you. Whenever you look at your vision board, you start seeing yourself having or doing all the things that you put on your board. A vision board helps you to identify, define and clarify what you really want in your life (Mosely 2010, p. 28). When in times of doubt or uneasiness, a vision board is a ‘visual’ incentive motivating you to keep pushing forward in order to achieve your goals. It has been recognised that the use of imagery has the potential ‘for developing more adaptive behaviour, coping with stress, solving problems more creatively and expanding human performance and achievement’ (Witmer & Young 1985, p. 187). To put it simply, a vision board helps to reduce your stress and anxiety, as it empowers you to focus on what is important to you and gives you a sense of purpose.

We have put together a step-by-step guide to help you create your own vision board, whether that be a vision board you hang up on your wall, or one that you have saved on your devices, the choice is yours. We have also created some fun printables for you to include on your vision board to get you started!
